Types of headlights: halogen lamps

Halogen optics was invented more than 50 years ago, and it has been distributed all over the world most widely. Conceptually, this type of lamps, by its structure, is similar to ordinary incandescent lamps, but the air in the bulb is substituted for special gas, thus significantly improving technical characteristics and length of service of lamps. The main advantage of technology, comparing to the latest solutions, is low price and the widest range of available models. Their luminous efficacy is significantly higher than that of incandescent lamps, inner surface does not become dark in time being, but the length of service is almost twice as longer.

Today, mostly double-filament halogen lamps are used in headlamps, where filaments of lower beam and upper beam are combined in single bulb, and, in single headlight casing, respectively. Models of cars with lower beam and upper beam being placed in separate casing, requiring single-filament lamps, are rarely distributed.

Different types of halogen lamps differ, mostly, by their method of installation in the headlight and by the type of connection to power network. The most widespread are lamps H4 and H1, and other lamps of H (3, 7, 9 and 11), HB (3 and 4), and R2 types.

Advantages:

  • Low cost,
  • Brighter light beam, comparing to incandescent lamps,
  • Twice as long term of service than that of incandescent lamps,
  • Extremely wide range of models in the market,
  • Possibility of installation to numerous cars,
  • Do not fade during exploitation,
  • Installation of additional complex, expensive equipment is not necessary.

Disadvantages:

  • Still insufficient luminous efficacy and low efficiency, comparing to more recent systems,
  • Length of service is shorter than that of more recent lighting technologies,
  • Sensitive to mechanical influence, trembling and vibration,
  • Very sensitive to foreign substances, therefore wearing clean gloves is recommended during replacement thereof,
  • Due to high heating temperatures, specular layer of reflectors has been destroyed gradually, thus lights gradually fall out,
  • Installation in plastic lights is impossible,
  • Use in adaptive lights is technically impossible,
  • If large amount of water is splashed on heated lamp, there is risk of cracking thereof.
